What is Integral Education?
Integral Education is a philosophy developed in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and his collaborator, The Mother (Mirra Alfassa).
This type of education helps a child develop:
Our aim is to open children’s minds to the world outside of their classrooms, their countries, and their cultures, and to make them more aware and mindful of their own internal world.
Integral Education is an educational process through which students are provided a dynamic group learning environment. It encourages conscious decision making, personal introspection, self-discovery, innovation, and respect for individual differences and cultures.
Importance of Integral Education in the Curriculum
In an effort to increase the effectiveness of education, it is important to choose a new educational model that seeks to develop responsible, creative and conscious contributors to a global community. Integral Education is a project-based model of education that emphasizes self-discovery and encourages the joy of learning for its own sake. Integral means “total” and addresses the totality of the whole person. It develops a sense of integrity, harmony and beauty in all aspects of humanity. With an innovative combination of classroom and activity-led learning, students will be taught a whole range of skills, aptitudes and abilities that will help to process information into knowledge that can be applied to life. When successful, such an education allows children to become responsible and creative citizens who strive for excellence and are committed to the progress of themselves and their community.
Need for qualified teachers – Supporting the Training Teacher
Given that the quality of education depends upon effective teachers, high priority will be given to recruiting talented and devoted teachers and training them in the Integral Education model. At the moment, schools in India are forced to rely on teachers with little to no training or experience. Research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement. It is critical that we pay close attention to training and supporting both new and experienced educators.
Importance of Educational Infrastructure in Learning
It is also important that students and teachers have the infrastructure, technology and basic tools needed for proper learning. Students in India are often malnourished and without basic learning tools that we in the US take for granted. Providing a facility for learning with basic technology, school supplies and food is essential for improving the educational level in these impoverished areas.
Importance of Global Citizens in communities around the world
It is important that education seeks to foster global citizenship. A curriculum that teaches students to become global citizens helps foster individuals who understand the importance of world connectivity. These students develop a personal and professional respect for the diversity of world views and cultures. Individuals, working together as global citizens are positioned to reshape communities and solve world challenges.
